Why is Prophase in Meiosis 2n?
No, do not get this confused. Before meiosis actually begins (during interphase of the S phase), you have duplication of chromosomes so that each chromosome contains two sister chromatids, but the number of total chromosomes is still the same, 2N. To get an idea of how many chromosomes you have, just count the centromeres (the center part of the chromosome). You will see that you still have 46 in a typical human cell (2 sets of 23 chromosomes = 2N). Before the cell actually duplicates, the chromosome is not the typical "X" shape that you see. The "X" shape of the chromosome only occurs after duplication. Know what I mean? Each half of the "X" is a sister chromatid. There are no sister chromatids before duplication. It's an abstract concept, but I hope this helps a little bit.
