Can someone help me with Biology?

chromosomes are threadlike structures composed of a p arm and a q arm, joined by a centromere right? Do they appear as X's because they always appear in pairs? but what happens to that 2nd centromere when they join as a pair? Sorry if this is an extremely stupid question :/
