Meiosis questions......?

So, I understand how the sex cells are haploid etc.. and how during fertilization, they will join together to make 46 chromosomes. What I don't get is the stage of meiosis. Why does it split into two daughter cells? I actually don't understand the process of meiosis whatever, so if someone can explain that to me, that would be awesome ^__^
