Air conditioner will not stop running when the set temp is reached?

My autistic son flipped the switch on the furnance on and off repeatedly before I knew he was doing it. Since then, my air wont stop running. The temp of my house was 69 and it was set on 72. The only way I could get it to stop running was turning the thermostat to off. I have tried turning both it and the main switch off and then on again to try and reset everything but it did not work. Please, if anyone has any suggestions I could try on my own before my husband gets home and freaks out!
